The UK Magnetics Society has an exciting programme of seminars for 2010 and we would like to call for papers for the following seminars. Please contact Jane Ward on jward@ukmagsoc.co.uk for further information.
One Day Seminar
Hybrid Drive Technologies
Co-sponsored by the IET
to be held at TRW Conekt, Solihull on 12 May 2010
March 2nd, 2009 saw the 100th anniversary of the granting of the first US hybrid car patent or “Mixed Drive for Autovehicles” as it was described then, by a German inventor, Henri Pieper[1]. Unfortunately for Pieper, the year before his patent was granted the assembly lines for the first “affordable” mass produced car based on the internal combustion engine, the Ford Model T were under construction. By the 1930’s production of hybrids based on the Pieper system had all but stopped.
One hundred years later, Hybrid Electric Vehicles have re-emerged as a feasible alternative to the gas-only internal combustion vehicle, with more than 1.5million hybrids on the roads today. Apart from the worldwide environmental issues, this re-emergence has been driven by the many major advances in magnetic materials, electrical machine design, power electronics and battery/fuel cell technology. This seminar will give an overview of the current “state-of-the-art” and explore the technical achievements and issues surrounding the advancement of hybrids today.
Following an early evening supper, the IET will then take you on a "A Journey from Power Station to the Wheel", with presentations by Steve Argent from ARUP and Peter James from Prodrive.
One Day Seminar
Magnets in Medicine
to be held at a venue to be confirmed
Magnets and magnetic sensors are now found in many different medical and biological applications, which include magnetic nanoparticles for drug release and cancer detection, magnetic sensors with magnetic microtags for encoding biochemicals, such as DNA and antibodies and biomagnetic retraction during surgery. This seminar will look at these different aspect of magnetics in medicine and biomagnetics.
Two Day Seminar
Developments in Electric Propulsion Technology
Hosted and co-sponsored by Höganäs AB, Sweden
to be held in Helsingborg, Sweden on 20/21 September 2010
The demands for reduced fuel consumption as well as environmental concerns are two of the main drivers for the introduction of new hybrid or electric vehicle propulsion systems. Extensive efforts are being made in research, development and industrialisation of reliable and well performing systems at reasonable costs. Continuously improved electrified products are being launched at increasing pace but in order to make the journey towards zero emissions possible new innovations and new technology will be needed. This seminar arranged together with th UK Magnetic Society will provide the exposure to the latest state of the art hybrid and electric propulsion developments for vehicle applications. In particular applications based on new magnetic materials such as (Soft Magnetic Composites SMC) will be highlighted.
The venue will be Höganäs (TBD) which is located approximately one and a half hours drive from Copenhagen airport in the southern state of Skåne. In addition to the comprehensive papers, test driving of electric vehicles will be arranged as well as a visit to the “Power of Powder” application development facilities of Höganäs AB.
One Day Seminar
CAD for Electromagnetics
to be held at Rolls-Royce plc, Derby on 4 November 2010
The Society will continue its successful series of biennial seminars/exhibitions on "CAD for Electromagnetics" when it returns to Rolls-Royce plc in Derby. This year the theme will be forward-looking with speakers from the CAD industry and academia invited to present their views of likely developments in the next five to ten years; what does the customer want and what can industry deliver? In short, the seminar/exhibition will enable you to make a better choice of package to meet your present and future CAD needs.
The target audience will be:
