The UK Magnetics Society is an international organisation that represents both industrial and academic interests in all fields of magnetics. The Society organises a number of seminars every year. The organisation of on a wide range of subjects promoting information exchange and networking opportunities, bringing together academic and industrial participants. The Society also publishes Magnews - the Society's quarterly publication which has a wide and targeted international readership.

The Society seeks to include all areas of magnetics including but not limited to :-

Electromagnetics in Power Systems Applications

18-June-2008 to 18-June-2005

AREVA T & D Technology Centre, Stafford

As the demands on our power systems become more exacting, there is an increasing need for the electromagnetic equipment associated with power generation, such as alternators, breakers, transformers, converters and arresters; to deliver better efficiency, to react faster and smarter when providing protection, to withstand increasing levels of fault tolerance and all the while still provide a good quality, reliable supply. This seminar programme is intended to explore the cutting edge of Power System Application technology today. It will provide an insight into the issues driving research in a Power System environment that is moving further away from the traditional stability of an intransigent grid and becoming ever more diverse and fundamentally weaker.

Nanoscale Data Storage: Squeezing More Data into Less Space

26-June-2008

University of Manchester, School of Computer Science

This seminar brings together leading experts to look at the possible routes to higher data storage density as physical limits of existing technologies are reached. The emphasis will be on the use of nanoscale structures to improve storage density as current magnetic technology runs out of steam. The use of new magnetic materials to allow the existing magnetic storage paradigm (hard disk technology) to continue and the introduction of disruptive technologies to replace the existing one will be considered. It is clear that any disruptive technology must give a three to ten times improvement in density depending on the cost in order to make a signficant impact and must have a 5 to 10 year roadmap extending density by at least further order of magnitude beyond the initial level.

The seminar aims to provide both an academic and industrial perspective on the following issues amongst others:
* Perpendicular magnetic data storage - future prospects
* Patterned magnetic storage media for storage above one tera bit per square inch
* Magnetic nano-wires for ultra-high data storage density
* The future for probe storage technology

NOMINATIONS FOR COMMITTEE MEMBERS

We would be delighted to receive nominations from members to join the UK Magnetics Society’s Committee.

Nominations would be welcome from industrial and academic members of the Society who would be willing to play an active and supportive role on the committee.  The committee meets four times a year in a lively and informal manner to discuss the ethos of the Society, future events and development of Magnews and our website.

The deadline for nominations will be 12 May 2008 and the position will be effective following our next Annual General Meeting which is provisionally arranged for June 2008.

Please contact Jane Ward on jward@ukmagsoc.co.uk or on 01235 770652 for further information.
